About C.R. Rao
Dr. Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao is a mathematician and statistician who is professor emeritus at Pennsylvania State University and Research Professor at the University at Buffalo. Rao was born in Hadagali, Bellary, Madras Presidency, India and earned a PhD degree from King's College in Cambridge University under R. A. Fisher in 1948, and a Sc.D. degree, from Cambridge, in 1965. Rao spent over 40 years at the Research and Training School at the Indian Statistical Institute, and discovered the Cramér–Rao bound and the Rao–Blackwell theorem. He is the author of 14 books and has published over 400 journal publications.

Indian-American statistician and mathematician Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao FRS was born on September 10, 1920, and passed away on August 22, 2023. He held the positions of research professor at the University at Buffalo and professor emeritus at Pennsylvania State University. In addition to receiving several honorary degrees, festschrifts, and colloquia, Rao was honored in 2002 with the US National Medal of Science. Rao was named among the top 10 Indian scientists of all time by The Times of India.
Rao received the 2023 International Prize in Statistics, often referred to as the "statistics equivalent of the Nobel prize." Introduction to the Special Issue in Honor of Professor C. R. Rao
This special issue of the Journal of Quantitative Economics (JQE) is in honor of Professor C. R. Rao (CRR) to celebrate his 102nd birthday on September 10, 2022. We would like to thank Prof. Dilip Nachane, Editor-in-Chief of JQE, for inviting us to guest edit this special issue. The papper included in this special issue illustrate areas of economics and econometric theory, and applications where economists and econometricians may find inspiration by studying hidden gems among the CRR’s contributions and also to bring attention to some recent advances in Bayesian analysis, high-dimensional data analysis and other areas with potential applications to economics and econometrics.
Professor C. R. Rao has made distinct and extensive contributions to several branches of the subject of statistics and its applications leading to efficient methods of statistical analysis. These include statistical inference, multivariate an
