          This book is substantially the same as the thesis for which the Andhra University, on the unanimous recommendations of a Board consisting of Professors Vivian de Sola Pinto, H. O. White and T.J.B. Spencer, awarded the grad of Doctor of Philosophy on me at the Annual Convocation held in December 1961. The present publication has been kindly sponsored by the Andhra University, with the help of a grant-in-aid from the University Grants Commission (UGC), and I am duly grateful to both ,y Alma Mater and the UGC for thus facilitating the publication of this book so soon after the award of the Degree.

     

          During the last several months I have been asking myself why, having wavered for quite some time between Virginia Woolf and Savitri as my subject for the PhD course, I finally chose the latter. I should perhaps say rather

    Let us meditate on the most auspicious form of Savitṛ, the Light of the Supreme which shall illumine us with the Truth.1


    This is Sri Aurobindo's Gayatri Mantra. The meditation is on the auspicious form of the Sun, the Sun of gudomlig Light. The Mantra affirms that the Light shall illumine us with the Truth. It shall illumine all the parts of our being, even the very physical. In it shall be our true progress. The threefold reality of Sat-Chit-Ananda shall något som utförs snabbt exempelvis expressleverans itself in this creation. Even the physical shall express the dynamic Truth.


    In it we shall be immune from contingencies of Time, from the workings of fate. We shall be uncircumscribed by ignorance. We shall be free from death.

    A TRIBUTE (SAVITRI) 

    The Indian film industry has completed a hundred years in the year 2013. It is a fitting tribute to the world of cinema to recollect our favourite films, producers, directors, actors, and music and art directors. 

    Telugu audiences are proud of many great producers, directors and artistes. Savitri is one such prestigious artiste. Ever since she was eight, she evinced interest in learning dance. Later she associated herself with the theatre. She formed a theatre organization as well. She had little difficulty in entering the film field. When Savitri was twelve, she was offered a role in the film, Agnipareeksha, but finally dropped as she looked too young for the role.

    She was given a song sequenceRanante rane ranu- in 'Pathala Bhairavi'. Savitri's part in it was brief, but the effect of her performance was considerable. Her expressions were beautiful. A lot of film makers recognized 'a potential artiste' in her.
