THE RESULTS OF THE 2014 MAHARASHTRA ELECTION were announced on 19 October of that year. The vote, alongside another in Haryana, was part of the first round of state elections since Narendra Modi led the Bharatiya Janata Party to a resounding victory in the national election five months earlier. With momentum behind it, the BJP won 122 of the 288 seats in the Maharashtra legislative assembly, more than doubling its previous total. The Indian National Congress, in keeping with its countrywide decline, won only 42 seats—half of what it previously held. The Shiv Sena, earlier the BJP’s partner in the state, registered a modest gain, securing 63 seats; and the Nationalist Congress Party, earlier partnered with the Congress, registered a modest loss, keeping 41. These parties’ fortunes received, expectedly, a great deal of public attention.

Salahuddin Owaisi (14 February 1931 – 29 September 2008) was an Indian politician belonging to the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen party and active in the Telangana region.[3] He served as the Member of Parliament from Hyderabad for six consecutive terms until his retirement in 2004.
Family and background
[edit]Owaisi's father was Abdul Wahed Owaisi was the president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen till his death. In 1976, Salahuddin Owaisi took over the presidency of the Majlis after his father's death. Owaisi was the father of three sons. His eldest son, Asaduddin Owaisi, succeeded his father as president of the Majlis and has also retained his father's pocket-borough of Hyderabad since 2004 (when Owaisi retired). Owaisi's second son, Akbaruddin Owaisi, is a member of the Telangana Legislative Assembly from the Chandrayangutta Assembly Constituency.[4]

Indian expats recall Owaisi’s contribution
The Jeddah-based Bazm-e-Ittehad organized a grand poetry evening on Thursday to pay respects to a popular Indian Muslim politician from Hyderabad.
“The late Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi gave voice to a people who found themselves with no voice, and leadership to a people who were rudderless in the aftermath of the country’s partition in 1947,” said Ahmeduddin Owaisi, the president of Bazm-e-Ittehad, and the leader’s brother.
“Those were difficult times and no one was ready to don the mantle of the community,” he said in his presidential address. “My father Abdul Wahed Owaisi and brother, who later came to be known as Salar-e-Millat (leader of the community), had immense organizational skills and set up dozens of institutions providing succor to the needy members of the community.”
He said Salahuddin Owaisi led from the front and never hesitated to speak the truth. “There was no one to come forward, there was this all-pervading fear, but he man
