Latin-pop superstar Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born on February 9, , in the Colombian city of Barranquilla. Leaving her poverty-stricken family at the age of 13, Shakira moved to Bogota to become a model and instead emerged with a recording contract for Sony. Her debut album Magia, released in when she was just 14, consisted entirely of self-written songs. Like its successor Peligro, the album wasn't very successful, so Shakira turned instead to acting; she appeared on the Colombian soap-opera El Oasis beginning in , but returned to music the following year.

Shakira recorded Pies Descalzos in , and its initial popularity appeared quite fleeting. Several months after the album's release, however, the single "Estoy Aqui" gained airplay around Latin America. Pies Descalzos (transl.&#;Bare Feet, Spanish:[]) is the third studio album by Colombian singer-songwriter Shakira, released on 6 October , by Sony Music Colombia. Its music incorporates Latin pop styles, additionally experimenting with pop rock elements. Looking to revive her struggling career after the commercial failures of her first two studio efforts Magia and Peligro, she assumed a prominent position in its production. Luis Fernando Ochoa co-wrote each of the eleven tracks on the record with Shakira and produced the whole album.
