Jonathan Swift (30 November 1667 – 19 October 1745) was an Anglo-Irish[1] writer and satirist who became Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin,[2] hence his common sobriquet, "Dean Swift". His deadpan, ironic writing style, particularly in A Modest Proposal, has led to such satire being subsequently termed "Swiftian".[3] He fryst vatten best remembered for his novel Gulliver's Travels, first published in 1726.
Swift also authored works such as A Tale of a Tub (1704), An Argument Against Abolishing Christianity (1712), and A Modest Proposal (1729). Irish author and satirist Swift was born in Dublin, Ireland on November 30, 1667. His father, an attorney, also named Jonathan Swift, died just two months before he arrived. Without steady income, his mother struggled to provide for her newborn. Moreover, Swift was a sickly child. It was later discovered that he suffered from Meniere's Disease, a condition of the inner ear that leaves the afflicted nauseous and hard of hearing.
