Who Was Sid Vicious?
As a high school dropout, Sid Vicious' "punk" look captured the eye of Malcom McLaren, creator of the Sex Pistols. After the band broke up in , Vicious holed up in New York's Chelsea Hotel with his girlfriend Nancy Spungen. Their relationship was full of ups and downs, leading to the eventual mysterious murder of Spungen. Not long after, on February 2, , Vicious was found dead in New York City.

One of the most mythic figures of the s punk explosion, Sid Vicious became famous for his edgy, rebellious persona and his self-destructive tendencies. Simon John Ritchie[a] (10 May – 2 February ), better known by his stage name Sid Vicious, was an English musician, best known as the second bassist for the punk rock band Sex Pistols. Despite dying in at the age of 21, he remains an icon of the punk subculture; one of his friends noted that he embodied "everything in punk that was dark, decadent and nihilistic."[2]
Early life
[edit]Simon John Ritchie was born in Lewisham to John and Anne Ritchie (nee McDonald; later named Anne Beverley; –).[5][1] Anne had dropped out of school and joined the British Army, where she met Ritchie's father, a guardsman at Buckingham Palace and a semi-professional trombone player on the London jazz scene. Shortly after Ritchie's birth, he and his mother moved to Ibiza, where
