Yo-Yo (born Yolanda Whittaker) has been among the most sophisticated and unpredictable female MCs around. She doesn't take an overtly feminist tack but urges young women to show sexual restraint and use their minds as well as their bodies.

Yolanda Whittaker aka YO-YO is a Grammy-nominated American rapper and actress. Much of her music has advocated female empowerment, denouncing the frequent sexism found in hip-hop music. She is the protege of gangsta rapper Ice Cube. Yo-Yo dubbed her crew the IBWC, which stood for the Intelligent Black Woman’s Coalition. Yo-Yo first appeared as a guest on Ice Cube’s AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted album in , on the track “It’s a Man’s World.” Cube returned the favor by appearing on “You Can’t Play with My Yo-Yo,” which was on Yo-Yo’s debut skiva, Make Way for the Motherlode. Her follow-up in , Black Pearl was well-received by critics, partly because of its focus on positive messages and uplifting themes that contrasted the popular gangsta rap style. Boyz n the Hood is a American coming-of-agehoodcrime drama film written and directed by John Singleton in his feature directorial debut.[3] It stars Cuba Gooding Jr., Ice Cube (in his film debut), Morris Chestnut, and Laurence Fishburne (credited as Larry Fishburne), with Nia Long, Tyra Ferrell, Regina King, and Angela Bassett in supporting roles. Boyz n the Hood follows Tre Styles (Gooding), who is sent to live with his father Furious Styles (Fishburne) in South Central Los Angeles, where he reunites with his childhood friends while surrounded by the neighborhood's booming gang culture.
