Carel Trichardt
Carel Trichardt (1939-) is a renowned and loved Afrikaans actor (stage, film and TV), director, drama lecturer and activist for performers’ rights. (Karel Trichardt is sometimes given as an alternative name)
Biography
Born and had his primary schooling in Linden, Johannesburg, then the family moved to Rustenberg where he began participating in eistedfodd and other events, and went on to take elocution lessons. They moved to Pretoria in 1955, where he finished high school Afrikaans Seuns Hoër, and went to the University of Natal Drama Department, Durban, where he met Petru Wessels, who was to become his wife in 1966. They have three children.

In 1963 he was one of the first four people appointed to the Natal Performing Arts Council (NAPAC), and the only actor.
Joined he joined the PACT Youth Company in 1965, later moving on to the main company.

Carel Trichardt has one of those rare and enviable qualities of being liked. He is personable and caring. As such he not only honed his skills as an actor, but he has also taken time to help others: teaching students at the University of Pretoria… eventually becoming Head of Department. He has campaigned for actor’s rights, becoming an active member of and later chairman of the South African Film and Theatre Union. For some years he also chaired the Theatre Benevolent Fund.
Essentially, he is an actor and has the distinction of being the first and only actor at NAPAC when the Performing Arts Councils established their Natal arm. He had been through the rigours of Prof. Elizabeth Sneddon’s training at the University of Natal and then auditioned for NAPAC. He got the job! The only job! It was in Natal too that he met his wife Petru Wessels who has shared his life for more than half a century.

Carel Trichardt (born 4 March 1939),[1] is a South African actor. He is the previous head of the drama department at the University of Pretoria. He gained fame as the voice behind the children's character, Knersis on the variety programme Wielie Walie. He also appeared in several films, including Katrina, Kruger Millions and Cavaliers games.
