    The remains of Wu Bangguo, former chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, China's top legislature, were cremated on Monday in Beijing.

    Party and State leaders, including Xi Jinping, Zhao Leji, Wang Huning, Cai Qi, Ding Xuexiang, Li Xi and han Zheng, paid their final respects to Wu at Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery. Hu Jintao sent a wreath to express his condolences over Wu's passing.

        The Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, Mr Wu Bangguo, had a busy programme this (December 2) afternoon after his arrival in Hong Kong at noon.

         Shortly after arriving at his hotel, Mr Wu met the Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, for an update on the latest developments in Hong Kong.

         After the meeting, Mr Wu was accompanied by Mr Tsang to the first stop of his visit programme - the Vocational Training Council (VTC) Youth College in So Uk Estate.

         Established in , the college offers full-time courses in vocational studies as well as vocational development programmes.

         Mr Wu was briefed on the college’s facilities and training programmes by the VTC Chairman, Mr Andrew Leung, and its Executive Director, Dr Carrie Willis.

    Former top legislator dies at 84

    Wu Bangguo, former chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, the nation's top legislature, died of illness at the age of 84 in Beijing at am on Tuesday, an official statement said.

    The statement was released on Tuesday afternoon by the Communist Party of China Central Committee, the Standing Committee of the NPC, the State Council, which is China's Cabinet, and the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
