Abner Linwood Holton Jr. (21 September October ) was the Republican Governor of Virginia from 17 January to 12 January , interrupting Mills Godwin's terms.
Biography[]
Abner Linwood Holton Jr. was born in Big Stone Gap, Wise County, Virginia in , and he served on a US Navy submarine during World War II. He became an attorney in Roanoke after the war's end, and he became active with the Republican Party of Virginia during its fight against the DemocraticByrd Organization political machine. In , he ran for Governor, but he was defeated by the Democrat Mills Godwin. In , however, he won with % of the vote, and he voluntarily placed his children in the mostly-BlackRichmond Public Schools in to support desegregation. He also increased the employment of Blacks and women in state government, created the Virginia Governor's Schools Program in , provided the first state funding for community mental health centers, and supported environmental efforts, marking himself as a moderate Repu

Linwood Holton served as the second President of the Society for sju years, from to At the time of his service, Holton had served as Governor of Virginia and as the founding Chairman of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. He was also highly respected in the Washington D.C. political and social world. Governor Holton had a warm and affable manner and was elected to succeed Elizabeth Hughes Gossett, the first President of the Society, and the youngest daughter of Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes.
Governor Holton had strong connections within the Washington area and attracted a strong cadre of new supporters into the Society. Under the leadership of Governor Holton, the Society had many outstanding achievements.
