Matthew Lipman (August 24, 1922 - December 26 2010) was a philosopher, educator, and researcher on US logical pedagogy.Lipman was the initiator, the theoretical and the leader in the development of philosophy for children. His work aims to promote the widespread teaching of philosophy and an adaptation of the concept of the ability to think for himself. Lipman developed a theory and practice, inspired by the work of John Dewey, who becomes totally innovative: creation of a rational thought and creative workshops through a philosophical discussion (children or adults). The whole rests on manually ("narrative") philosophical novels and books ("tutorials"). Matthew Lipman (August 24, 1923 in Vineland, New Jersey – December 26, 2010 in West Orange, New Jersey) is recognized as the founder of the contemporary Philosophy for Children movement. His belief that children possess the ability to think abstractly from an early age led him to the conviction that children's education should focus on helping them to improve their reasoning, inquiry, and judgment skills.
Life
[edit]Lipman served in the United States Army during the Second World War, with campaigns in France, Germany, and Austria. He was a Fulbright Scholar at the Sorbonne in Paris from 1950-1951, where he met and married another Fulbright Scholar, Wynona Moore, who became the first African-American woman to be elected to the New Jersey State Senate. Lipman completed his Ph.D. in Philosophy at Columbia University in 1953, where he met and began a correspondence with the American philosopher John Dewey.
