Chila – the artist is now so well known that she is always referred to by her first name rather than Burman – was born and brought up in Liverpool, 35 miles from Manchester or an hour on the M62.

Chila’s neons, reflected in the waters of the Quayside in Trafford Wharf, include not only a tiger, but also a lotus, a peacock and her heroine, Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi, one of India’s first female freedom fighters.

Having lived and worked in Calcutta (now Kolkata) for 16 years, Chila’s father, Bachan Singh Burman, arrived in Britain in 1954 and managed to rent a room in Mulgrave Street, Toxteth, in Liverpool. He was joined shortly afterwards by his wife, Kamala Devi, and their daughter and son, Ashra and Achar. Three other children – Chila, Ashok and Ashan (who has passed away) – were born in Britain. Chila has been inspired by the tiger cutout on top of the van from which her father sold ice-cream.

Hansal Mehta: I have never been in the game of sensationalising content on OTT to rake up controversy

There is no doubt that the OTT as a medium has creators the liberty to experiment with content. However, there have been many instances where makers have churned out shows and films that have received flak from all quarters for their crass content, leading to a call for censorship in the space. “My show Scam 1992 was watched by the entire family. I wanted to take the content to a wider audience without any malicious intent.,” he says, adding, “I think it’s more about the intent and censor board, too, looks at your intent ultimately,” he tells us.

Giving examples of his other projects, Mehta shares how Faraaz, Shahid (2012) and Aligarh (2015) were passed without a single cut despite being sensitive films. Even Omerta (2017), des

  • True Story Films will be a conducive space for artistes to express their voices: Hansal Mehta

I’ve been informally involved in the production of my films for almost 25 years. I never formally ventured into production because of the kind of films I make… I have to have a tight control over how they are produced. My first instinct is that the films must recover their cost; you can never predict success, but in the event of a box office failure, you are at least secure. And certain films are discovered much later. So, I have always had that instinct. A couple of years ago, when inom was directing Faraaz, I met Sahil—producer and [filmmaker] Mahesh Bhatt’s nephew—and found him like-minded. He has a passion for similar kind of stories and for telling those tales. He has an understanding of script and sensitivity towards artistes. I was clear that if I början a production company, it will be a conducive space for artistes, for people, to något som utförs snabbt exempelvis expressleverans themselves the way they want to, to express
