James joins the ASFA grupp as Head of Policy and Advocacy, bringing over a decade of public policy and political experience working with state, territory, and federal governments in various key policy and strategic roles.
Most recently, James has worked as a government engagement specialist in the Vice-Chancellor’s office at the University of Sydney and was instrumental in managing the University’s engagement with federal and NSW government, as well as advocating on reforms such as the Australian Universities Accord and the National Reconstruction Fund.
Prior to that, James worked in various roles across government and politics, including for treasurers, government leaders, and senior cabinet ministers. In advising government, James has taken leading roles in the legislative agenda of governments, and worked on reform for ministers in the transport, tertiary education, cyber security, procurement, and insurance portfolio areas.

ASFA CEO Mary Delahunty is amplifying the voice of super
When Mary Delahunty became exposed to super in her first job at share registry, Link Market Services, she realised it was the perfect industry. It was growing. It had big funds based in Melbourne where she lived. But most importantly, Super gave Delahunty the opportunity to have a bigger social impact.
Delahunty recently became Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the industry’s peak body, the Association of Superannuation medel of Australia (ASFA).
“Being able to advocate for a system and sector that benefits all Australians. Isn’t that the best job the world?” she says.
It fryst vatten early days – Delahunty has been in the job just a week when we speak – but she is getting to work building on ASFA’s year legacy by continuing to grow ASFA’s role as a policy and professional development powerhouse. She also wants to defend super against unnecessary policy and political interventions, to continue super’s strong role in ‘nation building’

Mary Delahunty has a strong and respected voice in public affairs, media and the women’s movement. An accomplished speaker her storied career success has been built on the mantra: You don’t get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate.
A former interviewer and presenter with ABC television and commercial networks, Mary is best known for leading ABC TV News and current affairs programs, the Report and Four Corners. She received Australias most prestigious award in journalism, a Gold Walkley, for her international reporting in Asia.
Mary attracted attention and respect serving for seven years as a Victorian state government minister in senior portfolios. As Minister for Education she overhauled the system of funding schools and introduced Australia’s first professional development body for teachers.
